”Sit I, by an old rickety chair under the shadow. An average smoldering-hot day in Aruba. In this dry land full of cactus’s, I marvel at them tall green pillars full of spikes. I wouldn’t dare to come close to one of these bludgeons… …Yet I see something remarkable from this old chair: A bird. Not any bird- a very clever one.
I sit still and observe this tiny, but beautiful bird from a distance, hoping that my presence does not disturb it in any way. I watch as this bird, not intimidated by the hundreds of spikes of the cactus, landing perfectly on top without hurting its tiny body. As it lands there, surrounded by very sharp obstacles, it pecks at the pink fruit of the cactus, which is also full of tiny spikes. In a precise motion, the bird is able to peel the skin off of the fruit of the cactus, section by section, leaving only the contents of the fruit exposed. The bird then, quickly eats the whole fruit and flies away.
Yet my surprise comes after, as the minuscule flying creature goes away: A flower is now in place of the fruit, where a moment ago, it was indeed a whole fruit. The crafty bird peeled the fruit’s skin section by section, and the result was a marvelous work of art: A pretty flower.
Not only did this little bird evade all dangers associated with the cactus- the bird also ate the fruit of the cactus and left a poetic mark behind. Beautiful as anything I’ve ever seen, it is a true master of its craft.
When I thought of myself as a fine artist… …I repent, for I was utterly wrong.”
